QR Codes have been around for a little over two decades now. Despite this, they have always struggled to gain wide acceptance. With the pandemic, however, they may finally be having their moment.

During the pandemic, when touching things is a risk, QR codes allow a quick and relatively convenient method for people to access information without touching things.

Where are they being used?

  • Restaurant Menus – For obvious reasons, handling physical menus makes some guests nervous and adds a lot of additional clean-up for restaurant staff.
  • Customer Loyalty Programs – Physical cards and coupons have been replaced by Apps and QR codes. Allowing you to access rewards and discounts without passing cards back and forth.
  • Paper Handouts – Like information brochures and product sheets. Any resource that can be easily replaced by a digital version or enhanced with a QR code.

Why is this important?

QR codes have struggled in the past as there has been little to no incentive for widespread adoption. They were a new and interesting way to guide customers online. However, once the novelty wore off people quickly forgot about using them and businesses stopped thinking about incorporating them into their marketing campaigns.

The Pandemic, however, has created a unique situation where people are being introduced to them again en-masse. This bodes well for marketers that have plans to use them in the future, and for those looking to create a different connection with recipients right now. QR codes remain a great way to link a physically printed item (like a post card or brochure) to a much wider – and interactive – list of your online offerings.

QR codes continue to become more popular, and users of all ages are becoming familiar with their usage. We may find it’s to be one of things that sticks around long after the Pandemic disappears.
